The set of photos seen above belong to a series called "Perspective" they were taken by a artist named Suzanne Saroff. Suzanne was born in Missoula, Montana and currently resides in New York taking these photos for multiple brands. Suzanne creates distorted pictures of regular household food items by placing the items behind several glasses of water or glass objects. The pictures use lighting to create "fractured" pictures that look like "digital glitches". “With tools and techniques such as refraction, directional light, and bold colors, my photographs give everyday items alternate visual avenues of expression, Taking shape via shadows or fragmentations, my subjects often become more than the singular and expected version of themselves.” says Suzanne.

INTRO TO DRAWING PROJECT
1. The most helpful warm up during this unit was the sign language hand “A” because hands take time to master so doing multiple hands and practicing consistently will help with gaining skill and technique.
2.composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject of a work. It can be thought of as the organization of the elements of art according to the principles of art. Value is the “the relative degree of lightness or darkness of a particular color.”
3. The pros of pencil are that it is the easiest way to learn how to draw and mistakes are easily fixed. The cons of pencil is that it is harder to blend than charcoal and can leave marks. The pros of pen are the ability to make it look realistic and the dark value of the pen color. The con is the inability to erase. The pro of charcoal is that it easily blends and can be used to create dark values. The con is that it is messy and easy to smudge.

my mentor’s name is Katelyn; she makes a lot of drawings of animals and technology. I can benefit from learning techniques on how to paint and sculpt. I hope that I learn how tips and tricks that will help me make less mistakes. The link to Katelyn’s digital portfolio is https://katelyn-apex-2018.weebly.com/.
Paint miXing
I learned that mixing colors to match others is extremely hard. I also learned about the difference about tint, shade, tone, and base.
You can make brown in three different ways. Red plus green, yellow plus purple, and blue and orange.
IDea of place
The place that I painted is a buoy in the Edenton bay. The place is important because it is extremely peaceful and I used to spend weeks there as a kid.
The most challenging part about the picture was creating the correct color values and creating a gradual color change created from shadows and water stains.
I feel that the most successful part about the picture is the waves. It was my first time ever painting water and I think that it clearly comes across as water.
The first thing I did was paint the background which was the sky and the navy color of the water. The next thing i did was paint the buoy and add texture like the waves and the seagull. The last thing I did was touch up on the lines and add any last minute details.

linocut pattern making project
My project shows line in the starry skies and in the architecture of the Cathedral. There are lines on the turrets and columns.
My piece is successful because the building stands out against the sky, and the colors add interest. The different types of lines on the turrets also add interest. If I were to redo the project I would change the turret on the far right because I feel like it lacks detail and it is just very plain.

in progress blog post
I plan to paint smooth out dents and scratches from the box before it goes into the kiln. Then after it is fired I will paint it with white acrylic paint and the flower will be blue. Then after it is painted I will apply a clear coat of glaze.
The flower on the box was difficult to make because if the clay was too thin it would break apart. The other difficult part was the cutouts because the walls and ceiling around the cutouts would crack.
My favorite part about the box is the flower. It looks like a flower and when it is painted it will be the centerpiece of the box.
The first thing I did was scratch and slip a slab of clay together around a pipe to make it cylindrical. Then it took a another slab of clay and scratch and slip it to the bottom of the cylinder then cutting of the excess. Then take another slab of clay and cut it to fit the hole in top of the box and add little pieces of clay on the underside of the top so it won’t fall off. Then I cut out triangular cutouts around the top half of the cylinder. Then I rolled out a long slab of clay , cut out circles, and thin them out to look like petal. Then I attached the petals to each other then when the flower was finished I scratched and slipped it to the top. Then I let the greenware dry before firing it. After it was fired I painted the bisque ware white and blue.

finished clay box project
I fired the bisqueware then painted it white, blue, and silver. After I painted the box with acrylics I used a spray on glaze, then I let the glaze ware dry and the box was finally finished.
The most successful part of the clay is the blue ombré flower. It is a great handle and is the centerpiece of the box.
If I were to redo the box I would smooth the walls and the the triangle cutouts. The other thing I would do is add another coat of white to hide the colors underneath.

warm up blog post
The most helpful warm up was the nose drawing. It taught me the way to draw a nose and shade it to make it look three dimensional
The most surprising about the facial proportions was that you can fit five eyes across the face. This is surprising because I didn’t think you could fit that many eyes across your forehead.

portRait Project
The people in the project is me(right), my sister(left), and my dog Thorin.
My medium was wood and glitter. I started by tracing the picture on a piece of paper. Then I cut out the parts I wanted glitter and taped it to the wood. The last thing I did was apply a spray adhesive and pour brownish- gold glitter over the canvas.
I think the silhouette of my sister(left) and my dog turned out great. If I were to change something I would make the people’s eyes bigger and fix my facial features so they are more pronounced .
Watercolor pRoject
I used one point perspective for my painting. I chose a building at a college my family and I toured. The hardest part about the project was trying to create shadow to make the painting more realistic. The children’s book warm-up helped me learn how to controls the brushstrokes. The 3-D letters was the second most helpful warmup because it helped me visualize one, two, and three point perspective
multi-mEdia art
the mediums I used was book pages, pen, ink , and mod poge. The techniques I used for the book pages was soaking them in tea and burning the edges to make it look aged. I also crumpled up the book pages to add more detail. The technique for the ink footsteps was linocut stamping. There is no special technique for the pen and mod poge but they still were important layers.
My words were “Marauder’s map” which is a magical map in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. The Marauder’s map shows the layout of Hogwarts (a wizards school in the book) and shows everybody’s location in the castle. I showed the words in my work by taking book pages from Harry Potter: and the Prisoner of Azkaban that talked about the map. The other way I portrayed the words in my artwork was by drawing Hogwarts and stamping footprints that were used to show the location of characters.

finAL EXAM
The art criticism process is a process where art is measured on creativity, meaning, realistic aspect, and technique. The piece is not judged by how great or well done the painting is, it is judged by how it come across to the viewers. A good piece of art has to have some elements or art and design principles incorporated. It also need a meaning and mood or what it means to you or viewers.
I see a clear blue sky, waves on a body of water, a log buoy tied together with rope, a faraway coastline, and a seagull perched on the buoy. If I to describe the painting over the phone I would say a seascape with a log buoy and a seagull resting on top. The evident art elements in the painting are line, shape, color, and texture. A color scheme used in the seascape is monochromatic because there are many shades of blue in the painting.
The six elements of art are color, value, line, shape/form, texture, and space. The six design principles are balance, emphasis, harmony, variety, movement/rhythm, and proportion. The elements of art used in my painting are line, shape, color, and texture. An element of art that was used is line; it is shown by the waves and rope which were curved and meandering lines. Another art element used was shape because the buoy was flat, organic, and amorphous. The second to last art element in this piece is color; this picture contains cool and calming colors like blue, brown, white, and black. the value of the hues is dark because it uses a lot of grays and darker tones. The picture has a low intensity and dull colors due to darker shades which create a subdued look. The last element of art in the painting is texture because the log buoy looks rough and corrugated like real wood. The principles of design that are used in the painting are balance, proportion, and emphasis. The first principle of design shown is approximate symmetry balance because the log buoy is close to the middle and both sides of the painting are similar with a couple of differences. Another principle of design shown in the painting is proportion because the waves are painted smaller as it gets farther away from the shore. The last evident principle of design used in the painting is emphasis which is shown by the log buoy which is in the foreground of the picture and is the main focal point.
The mood of the painting tranquil and calming which is created by the cool colors and relaxing seascape. The feeling that is communicated is peaceful, lighthearted, and makes the viewer relaxed and enthralled. the ideas represented in the seascape are childhood memories, tranquility, and the beauty and grandeur of nature. The story being told is how children see everything with a sense of adoration , and as you grow up you start to stop noticing and appreciating nature.
I am very proud of the painting, and I think the techniques I used worked well. I think the seascape was successful; the waves looked very realistic and the sky colors were subtle and very accurate to the photograph. The technique I used for the waves was hard, and it was the first time I have ever painted a seascape. I think the mood of the painting which was tranquility came across the painting well due to the dull colors, amorphous shapes, and sinuous lines. The only thing that I think I lacked was creativity because it was a regular seascape painting, and I could of added a character to make it more unique and challenging.

Copying is not always plagiarism as long as the artists does it in a respectful way. This can be done by asking for permission from the original artist or acknowledging that it is not an original work. If the art your copying is something as famous as the Mona Lisa then just state or write that it is based off of the Mona Lisa. For my multi media project I chose to create a piece based of of the marauders map from The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, so I put the title of the series and the author somewhere it can be seen. If the original artist does not want you to copy then don't do it because it is disrespectful to the artist who worked hard to make it.

The thing I find most difficult is creating something useful like the clay box. I try to make my art a similar color as the room it resides in because otherwise it looks out of place and messy. For the clay box project I chose the colors blue and white which were the colors of my sister's bedroom. I try to make art that has a purpose like a box to hold things or a painting to put on my wall. It is important to make art that fits well with the room because then it will more likely stay and not be put away to be never seen again.

If given the opportunity I would redo the portrait project. This is because it looks half done, and viewers find it hard to see the faces. I would choose a different medium than glitter and use multiple colors which might help people see the characters better. I also would not use a wood board as a canvas because it was heavy and gigantic which made it impossible to hang up on a wall.
